The Island is awake with colour, the days are long, and the calendar is packed with events that span everything from high-energy dance music to intimate encounters with local artists, from community theatre to competitive running through some of Britain's most dramatic coastal scenery. Here's our guide to what not to miss this May…
Isle of Wight Dance Weekender – 9 & 10 May, Robin Hill Country Park
Kicking off the month with a bang, the brand-new Isle of Wight Dance Weekender lands at Robin Hill Country Park on 9 and 10 May for what promises to be one of the most exciting new events in the Island's festival calendar. This high-energy music and dance festival brings together the best in house, garage and chart-topping pop, set on the iconic Isle of Wight.
Performing across three distinct arenas, the festival is headlined by some of the most iconic names in UK pop, dance and garage. Saturday's main stage features the likes of Majestic, Gok Wan, Artful Dodger and Shades of Rhythm, with Chicane headlining, while Sunday sees East 17, Haskell and Abigail Bailey perform before Professor Green closes out the festival.
The Main Arena is a giant, circus-style big top packed with powerful sound, lighting, lasers and effects. The Forest Arena is set in the trees with immersive visuals and a woodland party atmosphere, while the VIP Arena offers a more laid-back, luxurious space with DJs spinning vinyl and signature cocktails.
Wight Proms Wednesdays – Monthly throughout the year, Northwood House & The Garlic Farm
If you prefer something a little more refined, the Wight Proms Wednesdays series offers a wonderful alternative. Launched to bring the spirit of the Wight Proms to audiences throughout the year, the lunchtime concert series takes place monthly at 12:30 on Wednesdays in the Ballroom at Northwood House in Cowes, with each concert lasting 40 minutes, making it the ideal addition to your lunch break.
For those who prefer an evening out, the same concerts are also available at The Garlic Farm for tapas and tunes from 6pm, with the concert at 7:30pm. Each event supports Independent Arts, the Island charity that uses the arts to improve wellbeing and reduce social isolation.
Isle of Wight Open Studios – 15 to 25 May, Island-wide
Running across 11 days in the heart of May, Isle of Wight Open Studios 2026 takes place from Friday 15 to Monday 25 May, with around 200 Island artists expected to open their studio doors. It's one of the most distinctive events in the Island's cultural calendar and a rare opportunity to step behind the scenes of the creative process and meet the makers in the spaces where they work.
From painting and sculpture to printmaking, photography, textiles, jewellery and ceramics, the event showcases the diverse talents of the Island's creative community, and all venues are free to enter. Studios range from coastal workshops and converted outbuildings to shared creative spaces and pop-up galleries in village halls and community venues. Printed directories are available across the Island, with free copies at Quay Arts in Newport, Dimbola Museum and Galleries in Freshwater, Monkton Arts in Ryde and Ventnor Exchange.
For a preview of what to expect, the IW Open Studios Showcase Exhibition at Quay Arts in Newport features work from over 90 participating artists and is open daily until 30 May 2026. It's a brilliant starting point for planning your Open Studios route around the Island.
Cowes Fringe – 22 to 24 May, Cowes
Now firmly established as one of the Island's most eagerly anticipated springtime events, Cowes Fringe is a vibrant celebration of music, theatre and comedy that lights up the town of Cowes annually in May, filling local venues with an electrifying mix of performances that showcase both local and national talent, from soulful melodies and high-energy pop to DJ sets and theatrical brilliance.
This year's programme raises the bar considerably. Stage legend Sir Derek Jacobi is among those appearing, sitting down for a conversation with Richard Clifford at a gala evening that also includes a charity auction and a performance by The Island's Got Talent winner Jennie Vacher. Families are well catered for with musical theatre performances, and there are community craft workshops, including a quilt project celebrating Cowes' maritime heritage. The festival also raises funds for Mountbatten Hospice, giving attendees the added satisfaction of supporting a vital Island cause while they enjoy the programme.
Set against the stunning maritime backdrop of Cowes, with its coastal charm and creative energy, Cowes Fringe brings the community together for an experience that grows more exciting with each year.
Three Rivers Music Festival – 29 to 31 May, Durrants Farm, Porchfield
Perfectly timed for the May bank holiday weekend, Three Rivers Music Festival returns to Durrants Farm in Porchfield, running from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 May. Named after the Medina, Yar and Newtown rivers, the festival celebrates connections between Island communities and has grown from a small reggae gathering into a popular family-friendly weekend.
This year's bill includes French act FÜLÜ on the Main Stage and acid house and jungle pioneer Ray Keith bringing his unmistakable sound to the Woodland Stage. Beyond the headliners, the line-up spans reggae, hip-hop, live electronica and bass-driven sounds, with a dedicated Community Stage showcasing homegrown Island talent. A Zen Den wellness area hosts pilates, yoga, breathwork, sound journeys and holistic therapies, alongside a wood-fired sauna, giving the weekend a festival atmosphere that's about far more than just music.
Isle of Wight Festival of Running – 31 May to 7 June, West Wight
Bridging the end of May and the beginning of June, the Isle of Wight Festival of Running is a week-long celebration of running in one of the most spectacular settings anywhere in the south of England. The programme includes the iconic Needles Half Marathon, a children's fun run, the Freshwater 5K, a 10K race and a wide range of evening social runs and running-related activities.
The racing weekend on 6 and 7 June is the centrepiece. The Tapnell 10K on Saturday is a scenic run from Freshwater village into rural countryside and through the fields of Tapnell Farm, returning through National Trust and nature reserve land. The Needles Half Marathon on Sunday follows a spectacular trail from Colwell Bay to Totland Bay, over the heathland of Headon Warren to The Needles, then across Tennyson Down to the Tennyson Monument, before descending to Freshwater Bay and Afton Marsh.
For younger participants, junior fun runs make the event a genuinely family-inclusive occasion. And even for non-runners, the week-long programme of social runs, talks and running-related events around the Island offers a wonderful reason to explore the Island on foot at its most beautiful time of year.
