The Ultimate Guide to a Sunday Roast on the Isle of Wight

Here on the Island, local chefs take pride in our great local produce - from locally reared meat and seasonal veg to perfectly crisp roasties and fluffy Yorkshire puddings -  meaning there’s no shortage of excellent places to tuck in. Whether you prefer a traditional country pub, a quirky local institution, or a seaside setting with spectacular views, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite venues to enjoy Sunday lunch (or any roast meal) across the Island…

#1 Joe's Bar

Nestled in the charming village of Niton on the southern reaches of the Isle of Wight, Joe’s Bar is a truly unique and beloved local spot. What makes Joe’s special isn’t just its excellent food — including Sunday roast served with pride — but the way it embodies island life. Operating from within the village’s newsagent and post office, this place is a genuine community hub, offering a warm, friendly atmosphere that feels like stepping into the everyday life of the locals.
Here, roasts are Sunday highlights, with hearty portions of meat and vegetables that perfectly complement a pint of local ale or a glass of wine. After lunch, why not take a short wander around the village or enjoy the garden and patio when the weather’s kind? This blend of exceptional Sunday food, friendliness, and rural charm makes Joe’s Bar a must-visit for anybody looking for a memorable roast dinner.

#2 The Red Lion

Set in the peaceful outskirts of Freshwater, The Red Lion is pure traditional English pub charm with an award-winning culinary twist. Known locally for its seasonal menu and excellent use of fresh ingredients, this is the sort of place where roast dinners are taken seriously, with tender meats, perfectly roasted potatoes, seasonal veg, and rich gravy all featuring prominently.
What makes The Red Lion stand out is its setting and reputation: a classic, relaxed country pub with cosy interiors, a gently crackling log fire in winter, and a spacious garden to enjoy in warmer months. The surrounding walks are stunning, making it ideal for working up an appetite before settling in for lunch.

#3 The Waverley

In the heart of Carisbrooke, a historic village near Newport dominated by its castle, you’ll find The Waverley, a traditional Victorian pub with a reputation for hearty homemade cooking and excellent Sunday roasts. Here, roasts are more than a weekend meal: they’re a celebration of local produce freshly prepared and served with all the classic trimmings.
The Waverley’s menu often features choices like beef, pork, chicken, or lamb, with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available too,  making it a great choice for groups with varied tastes. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with rotating ales from local breweries and a lovely garden for sunny afternoons. Cosy interiors with log fires in cooler months add to the charm, while the pub’s proximity to Carisbrooke Castle and walking trails makes it great for a long day out followed by a satisfying roast.

#4 The Crab and Lobster Inn

For something a bit different, where roast dinner meets sea breeze, head to The Crab and Lobster in Bembridge. This family-run, four-generation pub sits overlooking the bay, offering spectacular coastal views and seasonal dishes that utilise the very best of island produce.
Here, you can enjoy a traditional roast alongside excellent seafood -a real treat if you’ve spent the morning exploring the Isle of Wight Coastal Path or strolling Bembridge’s pretty streets. The combination of great location, friendly service, and relaxed ambience makes this a favourite for both locals and visitors.

#5 The Steamer Inn

Perched on Shanklin Esplanade, The Steamer Inn offers one of the most scenic views on the Isle of Wight for your roast dinner. With panoramic vistas across Sandown Bay and the English Channel, this is the kind of place where you can enjoy hearty comfort food with your toes still smelling of sea air.
Seafood features heavily here, but The Steamer is also well known for its classic pub fare, including excellent Sunday roasts that pair wonderfully with a crisp sea breeze and a pint of local ale. The nautical theme inside gives a cosy, maritime feel, while the outdoor seating on the veranda is a true summertime favourite.

#6. The Spyglass Inn

Last but certainly not least is The Spyglass Inn in Ventnor, one of the Isle of Wight’s most iconic seaside pubs. Situated right on the water’s edge, The Spyglass offers spectacular views across the English Channel and a lively yet welcoming atmosphere that perfectly complements a Sunday roast or relaxed mid-week lunch.
While the menu here covers a range of British classics and fresh seafood, Sunday roasts are part of the charm, and there’s always an emphasis on fresh ingredients and generous portions. The pub also boasts a great selection of real ales, live music nights, and plenty of character - from the memorabilia on the walls to the friendly service - making this a great stop whether you’re finishing a coastal walk or just soaking in sunset views.
