Did Somebody say Cake?

Did Somebody say Cake?

There’s something deeply satisfying about a walk that ends with coffee and cake, or perhaps a proper lunch if you’ve earned it?! Luckily, the Isle of Wight excels at both scenic routes and memorable pit stops.

Whether you’re tackling windswept downs, wandering woodland paths, or enjoying an easy coastal stroll, you’re never far from a welcoming café. Here are some of our favourite walk-and-refuel combinations…

Tennyson Down

Café stop: Dimbola Tea Room

Few walks deliver drama quite like Tennyson Down. think rolling chalk ridges, wide skies, and those unmistakable views of The Needles, which make this one of the Island’s most iconic routes.

Perfectly placed nearby, Dimbola Tea Room offers exactly what walkers hope to find: generous slices of homemade cake, proper cream teas, and hearty breakfasts if you’re fuelling up before setting out. The building itself was once home to pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, adding a real sense of character to your stop.

The full route stretches around seven miles, though shorter options still deliver the views.

The Red Squirrel Trail

Café stop: Pedallers Café

Despite its adventurous name, the Red Squirrel Trail is wonderfully gentle. The traffic-free route weaves through woodland, countryside, and nature reserves, making it ideal for relaxed exploring with the family.

Pedallers Café sits directly on the trail and is a welcome sight for walkers and cyclists. Expect excellent coffee, satisfying breakfasts, paninis, and homemade specials. In cooler months, the fire is a treat; in summer, the decking overlooking the wildlife pond is hard to beat.

Keep your eyes peeled. Red squirrel sightings are not uncommon in this area.

Ventnor Downs

Café stop: Lady Scarlett’s Tea Parlour

Ventnor Downs rewards effort with some of the Island’s finest coastal views. Chalk slopes tumble toward the sea, and the scenery shifts beautifully with the seasons.

Down in town, Lady Scarlett’s Tea Parlour provides a charmingly eccentric reward. Think vintage décor, indulgent cakes, and excellent cream teas served with theatrical flair.

You can ease into the walk by starting higher up, or fully commit by climbing from Ventnor itself - cake always tastes better when it’s earned!

Newport Town Strolls

Café stop: One Holyrood Cafe

Not every great walk requires hiking boots. Newport’s streets, squares, and riverside paths provide a relaxed way to soak up Island life.

Tucked away, One Holyrood Café has become a firm local favourite. Whether you’re after brunch, cake, or something more filloing you’ll find plenty of choice. In the warmer weather, the secret walled garden is an absolute must-visit.

Brighstone Village to the Coast

Café stop: The Pearl Café

Brighstone’s thatched cottages and timeless charm set the tone for a wonderfully peaceful walk. From the village, routes drift toward Grange Chine and along the spectacular Military Road coastline.

The Pearl Café provides the perfect coastal pause. Expect sweeping sea views, homemade cakes, and a warm welcome for all, dogs included.

Sandown, Shanklin & Culver Downs

For easy seaside strolling, the Sandown-to-Shanklin sea wall is a classic. Those wanting more elevation can venture up toward Culver Downs for expansive coastal views.
