A West Wight wander…

A West Wight wander…
1st June 2023

In our latest instalment from our walking series, our Freshwater branch has decided on a West Wight walk that takes in some of their favourite places to visit and showcases the ‘best of the west’.

Known locally as The Freshwater Way, this walk is roughly five miles, and you can expect it to take two or more hours depending on where you stop along the way. Starting in the historic market town of Yarmouth, head west over the bridge towards Gasworks Lane where you will pick up a trail into Saltern Wood and out into a field offering lovely countryside views.

Cross over the stile as you make your way downhill over two footbridges and another stile until you arrive in the pretty hamlet of Norton Green.

Continue here towards Kings Manor Farm, following the path between the farm buildings until your reach a small footbridge and stiles. Turn onto the tarmac farm lane and continue with a churchyard on your left as you emerge next to All Saints Church and The Red Lion - a favourite spot with locals and visitors alike thanks to the welcoming staff, local drinks and Michelin-recommended food!

From here, turn left and follow the road onto The Causeway Bridge running over the River Yar, a picturesque spot where you can feed the ducks and swans, spot migrating birds and take a photo or two. Cross the bridge and then turn right onto a well-trodden path that runs the length of the old railway line. At the end of the path you will come to a cafe aptly named the ‘End of the Line’.

Cross the road towards the garage and from here, take Stroud Road where opposite Stroud Playing Fields, you will find a signposted footpath to Easton Lane. Turn left when exiting onto Easton Lane and follow the road to the end. Take the left road onto Blackbridge Road where about 100 meters along, you will find another signposted footpath on your right, directing you to Freshwater Bay across the marshland.

Arrive in Freshwater Bay where you can treat yourself to a rest on the beach, maybe even a swim before making the most of your surroundings with a cup of tea and a slice of well-earned cake at Dimbola.
