One of our absolute favourite spots on the Isle of Wight is the charming coastal town of Ventnor. Nestled on the Island's southern coast, this seaside town has so much to offer, from its stunning scenery and fascinating history to its vibrant cultural events. Here are some of our Ventnor team’s favourite things to do…
There’s no better way to start your day in Ventnor than a refreshing walk along the coast. The route from Ventnor Beach to Steephill Cove is a treasure trove of natural beauty, offering stunning sea views and a peaceful atmosphere.
As you head westward, the path leads you up and around the cliffside, offering panoramic views of the English Channel. The trail is well-maintained, making it suitable for most fitness levels, but it does include some gentle inclines—so be sure to wear comfortable footwear!
Keep an eye out for Ventnor’s resident wall lizards- they thrive in the gorgeous Undercliff area, which boasts unique flora and a subtropical microclimate.
After about 20–30 minutes of walking, you’ll arrive at Steephill Cove. This picturesque, secluded cove feels like a hidden slice of paradise. With its quaint beachside cottages, lobster pots, and lack of road access, Steephill Cove is an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle. Grab a coffee or an ice cream from one of the kiosks, and simply soak in the peace.
After working up an appetite, it’s time for lunch, and there’s no better place than The Spyglass Inn. Perched right on the waterfront in Ventnor, this historic pub offers a hearty menu and unbeatable views.
The Spyglass is a local institution, known for its maritime charm, live music, and friendly atmosphere. The interior is packed with nautical memorabilia, but on a sunny day, we recommend grabbing a seat outside to enjoy the sea breeze.
The menu features a mix of classic pub favourites and fresh seafood dishes. Whether you opt for the fish and chips, a crab sandwich, or one of their famous ploughman’s platters, you’re in for a treat. Pair your meal with a pint of local ale or a refreshing cider.
No visit to Ventnor would be complete without a trip to Ventnor Botanic Garden. This extraordinary garden is unlike any other in the UK, thanks to the area’s unique microclimate, which allows an impressive variety of subtropical plants to thrive.
The garden is spread across 22 acres and is home to an array of themed areas, including the Mediterranean Garden, the South African Terrace, and the New Zealand Garden. Each section offers a glimpse into the flora of far-flung regions, making it feel like you’re travelling the world without leaving the Isle of Wight.
For those interested in the science behind the garden, the visitor centre provides fascinating insights into the geology, history, and climate of the area. And if you’re feeling peckish after your exploration, the on-site café serves up delicious meals and snacks made with fresh, local ingredients—some of which are grown right in the garden!
Ventnor isn’t just about stunning landscapes and good food—it’s also a cultural hotspot, with a calendar full of exciting events throughout the year. One of the highlights is the Ventnor Fringe Festival, a week-long celebration of arts, music, and performance.
Held every summer, the Fringe transforms the town into a creative wonderland, with pop-up venues, street performances, and a packed schedule of shows. From comedy and live music to theatre and spoken word, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The festival has a laid-back, bohemian vibe, making it a fantastic way to experience the local creative scene.
Another popular event is the Ventnor Carnival, one of the oldest and most vibrant carnivals on the Isle of Wight. Featuring colourful floats, lively music, and a real sense of community spirit, the carnival is a must-see if you’re visiting in late summer.
