Our favourite things to do…East Cowes
16th November 2024

This coastal town has plenty of places that make us love it here. There’s much more to East Cowes than just being the world-renowned sailing location’s neighbour - it’s a vibrant, picturesque town with so much to explore. From historical sites to charming eateries, East Cowes offers a mix of relaxation and excitement, including some hidden gems you might not know about…

Stroll Through History at Osborne House

No visit would be complete without exploring the grounds of Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s holiday home and an absolute treasure trove of history, architecture, and scenic views. Built in the mid-19th century, Osborne House was designed as a private escape for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and it remains a stunning testament to their love of the Isle of Wight. The estate is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public, offering an incredible opportunity to experience history firsthand.

Start your day with a peaceful stroll through the gardens. In the warmer months, the Italianate Terrace is a gorgeous place to wander, with vibrant flowers, perfectly trimmed hedges, and views across the Solent that Queen Victoria herself loved to paint. Wander down to the Swiss Cottage, a charming little house where the royal children learned everything from gardening to cooking.

The walk down to Osborne Beach is another highlight. Queen Victoria was said to have loved swimming here (there’s even a bathing machine she used!). Today, you can visit the beach, which has remained beautifully untouched, offering crystal-clear views over the water. It’s a great place to sit back, breathe in the fresh sea air, and imagine the royal family taking in the same scenery.

Refuel at Artisan Café

After a morning of walking and exploring, head back into town for lunch at one of East Cowes’ cosiest spots, Artisan Café. This local favourite has earned a reputation for its diverse range of brunch and lunches, with an Asian theme and a very welcoming atmosphere. It’s just the kind of place to recharge after a morning at Osborne House, offering fresh food with a focus on quality ingredients.

The menu is always packed with flavourful options that change with the seasons, and it’s known for its superb coffee and pastries. We recommend starting with one of their artisan coffees; whether you’re a latte lover or prefer a strong espresso, they’ve got something that’ll hit the spot. For lunch, their signature Korean Pork is a particular favourite, but the menu changes often, so you’ll find something new each time you visit.

One of the best parts about Artisan Café is its laid-back vibe. With its cosy decor and friendly staff, it’s easy to settle in, watch the world go by, and chat with the locals. It’s also dog-friendly, so if you’ve brought your four-legged friend along, they’ll be just as welcome as you are!

Discover Nautical Heritage at The Classic Boat Museum

After refuelling, it’s time to head to a true gem for maritime enthusiasts, The Classic Boat Museum. Both Cowes and East Cowes are internationally recognised for their maritime history, and this museum is a tribute to that legacy. Tucked away along the waterfront, the museum offers a unique look into the Isle of Wight’s seafaring past, with exhibits that are sure to captivate both avid sailors and landlubbers alike.

The Classic Boat Museum is split into two sections: the Boat Gallery here in East Cowes and the Gallery of Yachting and Maritime History in Cowes. In the Boat Gallery, you’ll find an impressive collection of beautifully restored boats, including classic sailing yachts, motorboats, and even lifeboats. Each vessel has its own story, whether it’s been used in Cowes Week (the town’s famous sailing regatta) or has played a role in historic rescues. For anyone fascinated by craftsmanship, this is a fantastic place to see how boat design has evolved over the years.

In the Gallery of Yachting and Maritime History, you’ll find displays on everything from famous sailors to Cowes Week’s history. The museum staff are knowledgeable and passionate about sharing these stories, making this a wonderful place to get a deeper understanding of East Cowes’ rich maritime heritage. Be sure to check out the gallery’s model boats—these intricately detailed miniatures showcase the artistry that goes into designing the perfect vessel.

If you’re lucky, you might even get to see a boat restoration in progress. The museum sometimes allows visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration work, which is done with incredible care and attention to detail.
