Local Guide to East Cowes… 18 May 2022
One of the main gateways to the Island (making it a very popular place for commuters) East Cowes has a very royal history.
Certainly, the most famous home on the Isle of Wight is situated here, you can glimpse it from the ferry as you arrive. Osborne was Queen Victoria’s holiday home. An Italianate masterpiece, the property is managed and restored by English Heritage. Marvel at the beauty of staterooms, where royal visitors were received, take a stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens or take a rest on the private beach where the Queen regularly bathed and her children learned to swim.
Just around the corner and once part of the Osborne estate, you will find Albert Cottage. Set in two acres of stunning gardens, it is now a popular boutique hotel, restaurant and event venue. Treat yourself to a night at the opera with two famous ones taking place in the grounds this August. you can choose from just wanting, all the way through to a three-course meal and stay!
Another site worth seeing, even just for the novelty value, is the chain ferry that links East Cowes to Cowes, across the River Medina. It’s here that many people make the journey to and from, you can even take the car!
