Certainly not just for the summer months, winter sunsets light up the sky magically during the winter season. Take a look at some of our top spots to catch a winter sunset on the Isle of Wight…
Possibly the top spot, experience an earlier sunset at Compton Bay. Follow the renowned Military Road westward, and watch as the sky lights up in front of you. During the winter, dogs are allowed on all beaches, and, if you’re lucky, you might find the National Trust van offering a comforting cuppa as you watch the sun’s descent.
When you’re on the island’s northern side, you’ll quickly discover why Gurnard is a highly favoured location for sunset watching. Take a seat on the green and watch the skies as wooden beach huts, sailors, and kayakers transform into silhouettes against the backdrop of a vibrant, fiery sky. Extend the fun and ascend the hill to The Woodvale pub, where the elevated vantage point adds a few extra precious minutes.
The vista from the summit of Culver Down is captivating regardless of the sky’s conditions, but on an evening ablaze with sunset hues, it becomes truly magnificent. Watch as the sun casts its vibrant glow across the sky, starting from Bembridge and Whitecliff Bay. Follow its journey as it paints the scenery across Sandown and moves towards Ventnor, finally descending below the horizon in the west.
Strolling along Ventnor Esplanade as the sun starts its descent unveils striking silhouettes of the ‘Back of the Wight’ coastline extending westward. Trace the promenade then along the cliff path through Flowersbrook, leading you to the charming and typically tranquil Steephill Cove—an ideal spot to appreciate the sunset.
If you are an early bird and sunrise is more your thing, then Appley Beach is a must. Stretching for miles with its pure golden sand, this is a popular destination for families and dog walks. Referred to as the ‘Garden Walk,’ this level pathway is ideal for both buggies and wheelchair users. One notable landmark is the striking Appley Tower, nearly 150 years old, set to reopen in 2024 as an Art Gallery, following extensive restoration efforts.
