As a local agent with deep roots on the Isle of Wight, we’re lucky to spend our days in some of the Island’s most picturesque locations. From idyllic countryside to charming coastal towns, there’s so much to love about the areas we call home. Here are some of our favourite things to do in the West Wight…
One of the best ways to experience the stunning scenery around Freshwater is by taking a walk on the Tennyson Trail, named after the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who lived in the area. Starting near Freshwater Bay, the trail leads you across windswept cliffs and rolling countryside, offering breathtaking coastline views.
The path eventually takes you to one of the Island’s most iconic landmarks: The Needles, a series of dramatic chalk stacks rising from the sea. There’s something magical about the combination of open skies, fresh sea air, and panoramic views that stretches all the way to the mainland on a clear day.
After a good walk, nothing beats a bit of downtime. Freshwater has plenty of cosy cafes and spots to recharge, and if you’ve still got the energy to spare, the local beach is perfect for a peaceful stroll or some rock pooling with the kids. Freshwater Bay is a picturesque spot with dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear waters—a great place to sit and watch the world go by.
Yarmouth’s market square is a delight for anyone who loves shopping that’s a little out of the ordinary. Here, you’ll find a variety of independent boutiques and speciality stores, each with its own unique character. Whether you’re on the hunt for gifts, homeware, or something stylish for yourself, Yarmouth’s shops rarely disappoint.
We love browsing in Blue, a local treasure trove filled with beautiful finds, and popping into Yarmouth Gallery, which showcases work by local artists.
Yarmouth Harbour is another highlight, buzzing with life as boats come and go. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely walk and soak up the maritime atmosphere. Stop for a coffee at PO41, or grab an ice cream and enjoy the gentle lapping of the water as you stroll up the Grade Listed pier.
No day exploring Freshwater and Yarmouth would be complete without a good meal, and we have just the place in mind: The Cow at Tapnell Farm. Located a short drive inland, The Cow is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
This award-winning restaurant serves up some of the best burgers on the Island, using locally sourced ingredients to create mouthwatering dishes. Whether you’re a meat lover or a vegetarian, the menu is packed with options that are sure to please.
The relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere makes it a great spot to unwind after a morning of adventure. And if you’ve got time to spare, Tapnell Farm itself is worth exploring, with activities ranging from an animal barn to axe throwing (yes, really!).
If you’re considering a move to Freshwater, Yarmouth, or anywhere else on the Isle of Wight, we’d love to show you around and share more of what makes this corner of the world so special.
