Our favourite things to do…Sandown & Shanklin
23rd January 2025

Working as estate agents on the Isle of Wight, we have the privilege of helping people find their dream homes here on this beautiful Island. Whether it’s coastal living or rural charm, the Island has something for everyone. We continue our series with a focus on Sandown and Shanklin, covered by our Shanklin Branch based on Regent Street.

Whether you’re a local, a potential buyer, or simply planning a visit, let us guide you through our favourite ways to explore this slice of paradise…

A Morning Stroll Along The Esplanade

There’s no better way to start the day than with a walk along Shanklin Esplanade. The crisp sea air and stunning views are enough to make anyone fall in love with the area. This is the Isle of Wight at its most picturesque – golden sands stretching out, gentle waves lapping the shore, and beach huts dotting the landscape. This route takes you past some of the town’s quirky landmarks, like the iconic clock tower and the pirate-themed crazy golf course (if you have time, it’s worth a go – there’s nothing like a little friendly competition!).

Exploring Shanklin Chine

Shanklin Chine is one of those places that feels like stepping into another world. This historic gorge, carved by nature over thousands of years, is a haven of greenery, waterfalls, and wildlife. It’s no wonder it’s been a source of inspiration for artists and poets alike.

The winding paths lead you past lush ferns, cascading streams, and, if you’re lucky,  a glimpse of a local red squirrel. Shanklin Chine is also steeped in history – during World War II, it was a strategic location for the PLUTO (Pipeline Under the Ocean) project, which supplied fuel to the Allied forces in Normandy.

Lunch at Finns Beach Cafe

Nestled right on the beachfront in nearby Lake, Finns Beach Cafe is a hidden gem. It’s the kind of place where you can kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the sand, and enjoy some of the best food the East Wight has to offer.

Grab a table outside and soak up the sea views while perusing the menu. Finns is known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and it doesn’t disappoint. From hearty sandwiches to vibrant salads, there’s something for everyone.

An Afternoon in Shanklin Old Village

If you’ve ever seen a postcard of the Isle of Wight, chances are it featured this charming corner of the town. With its thatched cottages, quaint shops, and bustling streets, the Old Village is like something out of a fairy tale.

Home to an array of independent boutiques, the Old Village offers everything from handmade jewellery to unique homewares. It’s the perfect place to pick up a souvenir or two – or to find that one-of-a-kind gift you didn’t know you needed.

Of course, no trip to the Old Village is complete without indulging in a traditional cream tea. We pop into one of the tearooms and settle in for a feast of freshly baked scones, clotted cream, and strawberry jam.
