Our favourite things to do…Newport
13th December 2024

As estate agents, we often hear people ask what makes Newport such a desirable place to live. For us, it’s the perfect balance of history, modern convenience, and a strong sense of community. The town’s central location makes it a hub for the Isle of Wight, offering easy access to other parts of the island. Whether you’re drawn to its historical landmarks, thriving retail scene, or welcoming atmosphere, Newport truly has something for everyone.

Our office in the heart of Newport gives us the perfect excuse to immerse ourselves in this charming town, which offers a rich blend of history, independent shops, and cosy cafés. Whether you’re new to the area, considering a move, or just planning a visit, here are some of our favourite things to do in Newport…

Stroll Around Carisbrooke Castle

Kick off the day with a visit to Carisbrooke Castle, a historic gem perched just a short drive from Newport town centre. This medieval fortress has stood the test of time and offers a glimpse of the Island’s history. Walking along the castle walls provides breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside—on a clear day, you can see for miles. If you decide to pay to go inside, one of our favourite spots is the keep. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic vistas are well worth it. The castle gardens are another must-see, particularly in spring and summer when they’re in full bloom. They’re the perfect spot to pause and soak in the tranquillity.

Coffee break at Café Isola

After a morning of history and fresh air, it’s time to refuel. Head into town and make your way to Café Isola, a local favourite for good reason. Housed in a former department store, this welcoming café exudes warmth and offers some of the best coffee on the Island. Their house-roasted beans create a rich and flavourful brew that hits the spot every time. We recommend pairing your coffee with one of their freshly baked pastries or a slice of homemade cake. Café Isola is more than just a place to grab a bite—it’s a community hub. The friendly staff and cosy atmosphere make it a spot where you’ll want to linger, whether catching up with friends, reading a book, or simply people-watching as the world goes by.

Exploring Independent Shops on Holyrood Street and Upper St James Street

Once you’re recharged, it’s time for a bit of retail therapy. Newport is known for its vibrant selection of independent shops, and Holyrood Street and Upper St James Street are the perfect places to explore. These quaint streets are packed with character and charm, offering a mix of boutiques, galleries, and speciality stores.

Holyrood Street has something for everyone, whether you are looking for a new outfit from Visual Impact, a stunning piece of jewellery from Adrienne Wroath, or some interior inspiration from Hurst, you can find it all here. Upper St James Street is buzzing with independent boutiques including Dragonfly for alternative gifts, Flower Garden for beautiful seasonal foliage and the brilliant Snacks and Ladders Cafe where you can enjoy a board game with your cocktail!
