Cowes isn’t just a charming seaside town we’re lucky to work in - it's the kind of place that feels like a perpetual holiday. With stunning waterfront views, lively independent shops, and an easy-going island vibe, Cowes is an area we’re incredibly proud to serve. Working as estate agents in Cowes gives us a unique perspective on the area. We get to see the town through the eyes of people moving here, and it reminds us just how lucky we are to have all this on our doorstep. The sense of community here is incredible; people are genuinely friendly, and it’s the kind of place where locals support each other and visitors are always welcomed.
Cowes has a rich maritime history, and you can feel that connection to the sea in everything here - from the architecture to the events, like the famous Cowes Week Regatta. But beyond the history, it’s also a modern, vibrant town with a growing selection of independent shops, restaurants, and cafes. There’s a perfect balance of the old and new here, which is something that makes it special and welcoming for people of all ages.
Whether you're a visitor or a potential new local, there’s plenty here to fall in love with. Today, we’re sharing some of our favourite things to do here, focusing on some of the local gems that really make Cowes shine…
One of the best ways to start any day in Cowes is with a walk along the coast to Gurnard. This easy stroll takes you along a scenic path with the Solent on one side and beautiful views of the countryside on the other. It’s about a mile from the heart of Cowes to Gurnard, which makes it the perfect length for a morning jaunt without feeling like a trek. The path hugs the water most of the way, giving you a lovely view of the boats that dot the horizon, especially during the warmer months when Cowes Week fills the town with an even more lively buzz.
Gurnard is a small village with an equally lovely beach that’s a favourite for locals who want a quieter escape. This stretch is great for taking photos, especially if you catch the early morning light or the sunset—the colours reflecting off the water are simply beautiful. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could bring a picnic or just stop by one of the benches to soak up the sights and sounds of the sea.
After working up an appetite, a visit to The Smoking Lobster is a must. Located near the marina, this restaurant has quickly become a favourite with locals and visitors alike for its unique approach to seafood and its stunning views. The Smoking Lobster combines the best of Asian-inspired flavours with fresh Isle of Wight ingredients, creating dishes that are a bit out of the ordinary for a seaside town - think more sushi and miso butter than fish and chips.
One of our favourite dishes to recommend is the Lobster Ramen. It’s a showstopper, served in a rich broth with generous chunks of lobster that practically melt in your mouth. The sashimi platter is another winner, especially if you want something a bit lighter. And if you’re a fan of cocktails, their mixology is top-notch; the Smoky Old Fashioned or an Isle of Wight Gin cocktail are local favourites.
No trip to Cowes is complete without a bit of shopping, and the recently opened Salt is a must-visit. This boutique shop is known for its curated collection of homewares and gifts, all with a distinct coastal feel. Whether you’re a new homeowner looking to add a few special touches to your place or just want a souvenir to remind you of Cowes, Salt has something to suit every style.
One of the standout features of Salt is its commitment to stocking items from local artisans and designers. You’ll find unique pieces you won’t see anywhere else, from handmade ceramics to beautifully crafted candles and cushions. Each item has a story, and the friendly staff are always happy to tell you a bit about the artists behind the pieces. For those of us who spend our days helping people find homes on the Isle of Wight, we love that Salt celebrates the beauty and creativity of the area.
And don’t be surprised if you lose track of time browsing the shelves - Salt has a calming atmosphere combined with a coffee shop that encourages you to slow down, take a break, and enjoy the little things. It’s one of those places where you go in for a gift and end up finding a little something for yourself as well.
