Our favourite things to do… Bembridge

Our favourite things to do… Bembridge
2nd November 2024

In this new blog series, we are exploring key areas around the Isle of Wight. Kicking off with Bembridge, which is a much-loved area and is covered by the team in our Ryde branch.

Bembridge is one of the Isle of Wight’s most charming coastal villages. Nestled on the Island’s eastern tip, Bembridge has that irresistible mix of seaside tranquillity, natural beauty, and a close-knit community vibe that makes it such a special place to live. So, whether you’re popping into the area to check out properties, or you’re already lucky enough to be living here, let us take you on a tour of some of our favourite things to do in this lovely village…

A Walk Along the Duver

If there’s one thing that makes Bembridge such a hidden gem, it’s the abundance of natural beauty, and one of the best ways to soak it all in is with a walk on the Duver. The Bembridge Duver is a beautiful stretch of coastal land managed by the National Trust, and it’s perfect for a relaxing walk, whether you’re alone, with friends, or have your furry companion in tow.

The Duver itself is a unique mix of sandy dunes and salt marshes, with stunning views of the Solent. It’s an easy walk, so you don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it—just throw on your trainers or a pair of wellies if it’s been raining. As you meander along, you’ll spot plenty of wildlife, especially seabirds. It’s the ideal place for a morning or afternoon stroll, where you can take in the fresh sea air and let the worries of the day drift away.

For history buffs, the Duver also has its share of stories. It used to be home to the Island's first golf course, which was established in 1882, and while you won’t find golfers teeing off here anymore, you can still imagine the Victorian holidaymakers who once graced the green.

A Pit Stop at The Pilot Boat Inn & Wight Knuckle Brewery

No visit to Bembridge would be complete without stopping by The Pilot Boat Inn, a local favourite perched right by the harbour. Whether you’re finishing off your walk along the Duver or just in the mood for some good food and local brews, this pub is the place to be. The Pilot Boat has a great reputation for its friendly atmosphere, tasty pub classics, and of course, its craft beer offering, thanks to the Wight Knuckle Brewery located nearby.

If you’re a beer lover, Wight Knuckle is bound to impress. They brew their own beers right here on the island, using locally sourced ingredients. Their range of beers is inspired by island life, and they’ve got something for every palate—from light, hoppy ales to darker, more robust brews. One of our team favourites is their signature IPA, which has a refreshingly crisp flavour with a hint of citrus—perfect for a warm afternoon. If beer isn’t your thing, don’t worry; The Pilot Boat has an excellent wine list, too, and their menu is packed with classic pub favourites and seasonal specials made with fresh, local produce. You really can’t go wrong with their fish and chips, especially when the fish has practically come straight off the boat that morning!

Shopping with Purpose at Sea Room

Now, if you’re anything like us, no visit to a new area is complete without a bit of shopping, and we have to give a special mention to Sea Room. This lovely little shop is a bit of a hidden gem in Bembridge, and what makes it stand out is that it’s a zero-waste store.

For those looking to live more sustainably, it is a must-visit. They’re passionate about reducing plastic and packaging waste, offering a range of everyday essentials without all the unnecessary extras. You can bring your own containers and fill up on everything from dry goods like pasta and rice to household products like washing-up liquid and laundry detergent.

More than just a refill shop, they also stock a fantastic selection of local artisan products. Think handmade soaps, candles, and skincare items, as well as beautifully crafted homewares, all made by talented islanders. It’s the perfect place to find unique, eco-friendly gifts or just treat yourself to something a little special.
