The Island is a perfect destination for a leisurely picnic, with a range of spots to choose from. Whether you crave a seaside retreat, a tranquil park, or a woodland escape, you’ll find the perfect place for every picnicker. Here’s a guide to some of our favourite picnic spots here on the Island.
The Needles and Alum Bay
The Isle of Wight’s most iconic landmark, The Needles, and the colourful sands of Alum Bay offer a dramatic backdrop for a picnic. Enjoy your picnic on the beach with breathtaking vistas of the chalky sea stacks and the vibrant waters of the Solent. You’ll also find several picnic areas near the Needles Old Battery, a Victorian coastal defence that adds a historical element to your outing. After enjoying your lunch, hop onboard one of the regular boat trips to see The Needles up close and personal.
Ventnor Botanic Garden
For a beautiful botanical experience, head to the Ventnor Botanic Garden. Nestled in the unique microclimate of the Undercliff, this garden showcases a diverse range of subtropical plants rarely seen in the UK. Spread your blanket on one of the lush lawns surrounded by exotic flora and fauna. The garden has a café, but bringing your own picnic allows you to explore its various themed sections, from the Mediterranean Garden to the Arid Garden, at your own pace. After your picnic, you can stroll down to Steephill Cove, a hidden gem of a beach accessible only on foot.
Appuldurcombe House and Grounds
If you’re a history enthusiast, Appuldurcombe House is a must-visit. This grand 18th-century baroque house, now a majestic ruin, is set within beautifully landscaped grounds. The expansive lawns are perfect for a picnic, providing plenty of space to relax and take in the views. The house and its grounds have a rich history, having once been one of the grandest homes on the Isle of Wight. After your picnic, you can explore the remains of the house and enjoy a walk through the surrounding parkland.
Mottistone Gardens
Managed by the National Trust, Mottistone Gardens offers a charming and peaceful picnic spot. These enchanting gardens are set around a 15th-century manor house and boast a mix of formal gardens, wildflower meadows, and ancient woodlands. You can choose a secluded corner in the shade of an old tree or a sunny spot amidst blooming flowers. Be sure to visit the ancient Mottistone Longstone nearby, a neolithic monument steeped in legend.
Parkhurst Forest
For a woodland adventure, Parkhurst Forest offers a rustic and peaceful picnic experience. This ancient woodland, rich in wildlife, provides numerous trails and clearings where you can lay out your picnic spread. It’s an ideal spot for families, with plenty of space for children to explore and play. The forest is home to red squirrels, a rare sight in England, so keep your eyes peeled for these elusive creatures.
Compton Bay
For beach lovers, Compton Bay is an excellent choice. This unspoiled stretch of golden sand and rolling surf is perfect for a laid-back seaside picnic. It’s popular with surfers and fossil hunters, and the dramatic cliffs provide a stunning backdrop. There are plenty of spots to set up your picnic, whether you prefer the beach or the grassy areas above. After your meal, you can take a walk along the beach, hunt for fossils, or simply relax and watch the waves.
