Autumnal Bike Rides on the Isle of Wight

Autumnal Bike Rides on the Isle of Wight
4th October 2024

Autumn is a magical time on the Isle of Wight. As the days grow shorter and the temperature begins to cool, the island transforms into a tapestry of red, gold, and amber. The crisp air, crunchy leaves underfoot, and gentle sunlight filtering through the trees make it a season that beckons visitors to embrace the outdoors. And what better way to experience the beauty of autumn than on a bike ride through the Island’s diverse landscapes?

With the mix of coastal paths, forest trails, and country lanes, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful ride through woodlands or a more challenging adventure along rugged cliffs, the Isle of Wight boasts some of the best cycling routes in the UK.

Here are some of our top routes and areas to explore on two wheels this autumn…

The Red Squirrel Trail

One of the most popular routes for cyclists, the Red Squirrel Trail is perfect for families, leisure riders, or anyone looking for a gentle introduction to the Isle of Wight’s autumn landscapes. This 32-mile route (with various shorter options available) takes you through some of the island’s most scenic countryside and woodland areas. The trail is named after the Isle of Wight’s native red squirrels, and you might even catch a glimpse of one darting through the trees as you ride!

Starting from Cowes in the north, the trail leads you south towards Sandown, taking in a variety of habitats. As you cycle through woodland areas like Parkhurst Forest, the autumn foliage is spectacular. The trees create a canopy of warm hues, and the scent of damp leaves fills the air. The peaceful surroundings are interrupted only by the sound of your tires crunching on the leaves, creating a truly immersive autumnal experience.

The Red Squirrel Trail is mostly off-road, making it ideal for a leisurely ride. The well-marked path and relatively flat terrain ensure that it’s accessible for cyclists of all levels. Be sure to bring a camera, as you’ll pass through beautiful spots like the River Medina and the village of Godshill, where quaint thatched cottages stand in contrast to the vibrant autumn colours.

The Needles and Tennyson Trail

For cyclists seeking more of a challenge, the Tennyson Trail is a must-ride. This trail takes you from Carisbrooke Castle, through Brighstone Forest, and up to the iconic Needles landmark, offering panoramic views of the Isle of Wight’s coastline and countryside. The combination of rugged terrain and open sky makes for an exhilarating autumn ride.

The trail is named after the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who lived on the island and often walked this same route, seeking inspiration from the natural beauty around him. Cycling the Tennyson Trail in autumn is particularly special, as the moody skies and cooler temperatures create an atmosphere that feels almost poetic. The sight of golden bracken-covered hills set against the deep blue of the English Channel is unforgettable.

The route is a mix of gravel paths, chalk downs, and woodland tracks, so a mountain bike is recommended for this ride. The ascent to Tennyson Down is steep in parts, but the reward at the top is worth every pedal stroke. On a clear autumn day, you’ll be able to see as far as the Dorset coastline. As you descend towards the Needles, the view of the white chalk cliffs contrasted with the autumnal colours of the landscape is simply breathtaking.

Newtown Nature Reserve and Coastal Path

For those who enjoy cycling at a more relaxed pace, the Newtown Nature Reserve offers a serene autumnal escape. This area, managed by the National Trust, is home to a variety of bird species, including migrating birds that use the reserve as a stopover. The mix of wetlands, woodlands, and salt marshes provides a varied landscape, which is particularly beautiful in autumn when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red and yellow.

Cycling around the reserve’s quiet lanes and coastal paths is a peaceful experience. You’ll pass through ancient woodland, where the autumn leaves fall gently onto the forest floor, and alongside tranquil estuaries, where the water reflects the changing colours of the sky. The coastal path also offers fantastic views across the Solent, and on a calm autumn day, the sight of yachts sailing against the backdrop of golden trees is picture-perfect.

If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the island’s wildlife, including deer and the elusive red squirrel. The slower pace of this ride allows plenty of time to stop and take in the views, making it ideal for nature lovers.

The Bembridge Trail

If you’re keen to experience the coastal beauty of the Isle of Wight in autumn, the Bembridge Trail offers a scenic ride along the eastern tip of the island. This trail connects Ryde with Bembridge, passing through woodlands, open farmland, and along cliff-top paths. In autumn, the coastal views are particularly stunning, with the golden light casting a warm glow over the landscape.

The ride takes you through areas of historical interest, including Bembridge Windmill, the last surviving windmill on the island, and St. Helen’s Duver, a National Trust-managed site with sandy beaches and rock pools. The mix of coastal and rural scenery makes this a diverse and enjoyable ride, and the sea breeze adds a refreshing element to your autumn cycling adventure.
